Connecticut NeuroPsychologist: Services

Multicultural and Multilingual Neuropsychological Evaluations

Independent Neuropsychological School Evaluations and educational consultation for numerous school boards in English, Spanish and Italian to clarify diagnosis, determine impact of culture/language on academic performance and evaluations, provision of school-based recommendations, programming, and interventions.

Evaluation of children and adolescents with neurological impairment (including, but not limited to, traumatic brain injury, seizures, brain tumors, progress post-brain resection, radiation, chemotherapy, hydrocephalus, anoxia, birth trauma/complications), Pervasive Developmental Disorders including Autism Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome, General and Specific Learning Disabilities, Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, and Intellectual impairment. Educational consultation to the planning and placement team including staff education and program development. Full day school observations to complement neuropsychological evaluations and discern program efficacy (when requested and appropriate).

The first step in the process is an in-depth interview with Dr. Ciocca. Dr. Ciocca walks the parents through the evaluation process step by step, explaining why a neuropsychologial evaluation is critical in understanding the child’s inherit strengths and weaknesses. The results of a neuropsychological evaluation can show what challenges the child faces in meeting developmental demands and what compensatory methods he/she uses to overcome them. It assists the evaluator to set forth recommendations and make future plans for the child’s education.

Dr. Ciocca can review previous records including but not limited to medical records, school reports, and previous psychological/neuropsychogical tests. Dr. Ciocca makes a point of never reading previous records until after she has performed her own testing.

Provision of Independent Adult Neuropsychological Evaluations (IME), Workers Compensation Cases, Legal/Litigation Evaluations, Personal Injury, and expert testimony. Specific emphasis on validity, response bias, and malingering in adversarial cases. Multilingual competency evaluations and evaluations for criminal mitigating factors. Adult Clinical Neuropsychological Evaluations and Geriatric serial evaluations including dementia work-ups, pseudodementia, and other central nervous system disorders.

Follow-up and Support

Dr. Ciocca provides on going support from her first contact with the child and the family. She understands the frustration and the challenges that face the family after being informed that “their child” is mentally challenged — that “their child” has developmental difficulties. She understands the importance of working closely with all members of the educational professionals on the child’s support team to best serve the child’s interest. Dr. Ciocca knows the importance of having an up-to-date referral file system and clear knowledge of other professionals that will serve the child. She has extensive experience working with professionals in a wide variety of related fields, including neurologists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathlogists, pediatric psychiatrists, behavioral opthomolgists, central auditory processing evaluators, and neuro bio feedback evaluators.
